The cycle is based on capturing a state that can be described as follows: you were rushing to class, but you were late. The lecture is in full swing, and the entire blackboard is already covered with notes and underlines, everything is intertwined. It is completely impossible to understand where and what the beginning was and what is now where. The only thing you can do is try to continue taking notes.
“Blackboard Structures”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Layers of black matte canvas, white pencil, chalk, and staples. Various sizes. 2021—Ongoing.
Exhibited: “Unknown Unknowns”, 23rd Triennale Milano, Milan, Italy, 2022—2023 / “Preserving Clouds”, Teresiana Library, Galleria Corraini, Mantova, Italy, 2023. / “Delicate Fractal” (solo), HSE Art Gallery, 2021. Curated by Yulia Yousma
Enlarged fragments of the surface of chalkboards. In this series, they are made on canvas. The fabric is rough and crumpled, its unfinished edge and powerful textured surface are visible. The chalk strokes resemble dusty trails, and the notes overlap and cover each other.

In some cases, there are series where the drawings appear as medium-sized sheets. This creates a sense of emphasis on a specific fragment, but this fragment is obviously part of a certain structure — an endless field of chalkboard. The preserved traces of hand movements add volume to this schematic narrative. Paradoxically, neither the letters form words, nor do the formulas have any mathematical meaning.

These fragments of a drawing without purpose are assembled into an array of intuitive writing. With the author and his intention lost, the entire text of the explanation becomes an abstract mass of intertwining threads. What do we begin to discern at this moment, and how do we become aware of what becomes the core of our observation? The eye pulls something out of this set of notes that reminds us of something we know. But this is also a mistaken judgment.
“Cards”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Black paperboard, white chalk, white pencil, 21 × 14,8 cm. 2019—Ongoing.
More stable forms also appear in the cycle. In this series, one can see the effect of the shadow of a forgotten figure left on this black surface. The object seems to have burned out in the sun from the window, leaving its clear but not obvious mark. In such calmness and without haste, the text acquires miniaturization and clarity, becoming closer to a notebook than to an impulsive saying. Even large individual words smoothly dissolve into the space of the sheet.
“Pages”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Black paperboard, white chalk, white pencil, 29,7 × 40 cm. 2022—Ongoing.

The stabilization continues, and images begin to emerge in the material. Objects resembling demonstration models for various chapters and parts of the discipline take shape. Their surface is also covered with chalk, but no longer contains any remnants of the story: clean forms and planes covered with light chalk dust.
“Signs”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. 2023. Black paperboard, white chalk, white pencil, machine-cut arrangements. Various sizes.
Exhibited: “Soft Links”, Galerie Watson, Paper Positions Art Fair, Berlin, Germany, 2023
If there is a chalkboard with an explanation, there must also be notes. Thus, notebooks with chaotic and expressive drawings and fixed stories on the spreads and sheets appear in the cycle. We begin to see lines and an attempt to structure the noisy and confusing explanations from endless chalkboards.
“Books”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Black paper books, stapled, white chalk, white pencil. Various sizes. 2019–Ongoing.
The sheets grow in size and begin to take the form of a poster or visual summary of one of the topics being studied. We can see an increased calmness in the forms and the structure itself. Traces of figures scattered across the surface signal a dynamic and active process captured on the sheet.
“Posters”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Black paperboard, white chalk, white pencil, 70 × 50 cm. 2023—Ongoing.
At a certain point, the boundaries of the sheets end, and the explanation bursts out. It occupies the surface of the walls and floor, folding into objects. There is no longer a chalkboard as the center of the explanation—there is a space in which it unfolds. We observe the effect of unfolding a plane into volume, gaining an additional dimension. And if we have to sit in front of a board or a book, then in space we can already move around.
“Surfaces”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Black paper rolls, chalk, pencil. Various sizes. 2023–Ongoing.
Exhibited: Metascope, 229Lab, Paris, France, 2023.
Having stayed in a filled space and found our observation points, we will be able to extract the most important things from them and transfer them in a more relaxed manner, created for contemplation. The sheets quiet down, and the structures of information in them begin to take on a more visible framework. Flying numbers form constellations, and the interrelationships between objects in the image become lighter and thinner.
“Schemes”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Black paperboard, white chalk, white pencil, 29,7 × 40 cm. 2022—Ongoing.
Exhibited: “Now. After. What”, Corraini Gallery, ARTISSIMA Art Fair, Torino, Italy, 2021.

The process of calming down leads to the appearance of cards and drawings. The chaos of direct speech collapses into a clear structure and begins to resemble instructions. Sheets with clearly defined themes gain clarity and stability. This hardly adds to understanding, but then again, that was probably never the goal.
“Brown Cards, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Brown paperboard, white chalk, white pencil, 15 × 21 cm. 2024–Ongoing.
You are tired of watching the story unfold. You look away toward the window. There is a bright blue sky. But clouds and other celestial bodies continue to take on structured forms out of habit, and point systems emerge on their own to stabilize your gaze. Bright blue windows continue the story.
Because explanation never remains two-dimensional, it unfolds into a multidimensional field — at the intersection of ideas, intuitions, conceptual traces. This field is ghostly by nature: transparent and layered, it exists as a composite of overlays, shifts, displacements. Over time, all layers of explanation blend, formulas change positions, texts accumulate, constructions acquire new meanings.
“Scroll”, “Relative Explanations” cycle. Video, shuffled multi-layered playback, dedicated software. 2024.
